Peter Nathaniel Malae is a relatively unknown - though he shouldn’t be - novelist from San Jose, CA. As a lover of prose/literature as well as the unapologetic “punch-you-in-the-mouf” truth telling of (most) Hip-Hop, this dude cleverly blends the complex realities of his Samoan/white “privileged-oppression” (he’s done time in prison as well as the University) to light in ways I’ve never seen done before. He’s an artist of incredible calibur and I literally felt like a fuller, more developed version of myself after reading his work. Sherman Alexie called ‘What We Are,’ A rollercoaster ride through the American haunted house of multicultural sin and shame. Violent and smart and funny. Stumbled onto a $6 copy at a bookshop in Santa Cruz last year and it changed my life.
