Obamacare: Bound for Mount Rushmore?
I grow more and more fuggin weary of the ‘Playa v. Hater’ binary most of us are pushed into when we talk about Obama and t/his Democratic party. This type of thinking leads all who get sucked into it, to assume that by criticizing Obama, one is automatically coming from a place of negativity and hatred for him and/or the communities he identifies with (African American, mixed race, POC, raised working-class, raised by a single mother, Kenyan, Hawaiian-local, etc.). This is undeniably understandable due to the overwhelming amount of blatant racist attacks from the GOP and all who fall under that umbrella on a small scale, as well as the 400+ years (and counting) of dehumanization/degradation/subjugation of Black people in America on a large scale. At the same time, this (false) ‘Playa v. Hater’ binary doesn’t allow space for people like Glen Ford of the Black Agenda Report to effectively respect, protect and/or correct our President when he breaks promises, doesn’t acknowledge poor and working people, and acts on behalf of his party’s corporate funders. Glen Ford and others like him have helped me to realize that while we must always fight against the President’s (and any oppressed person’s) demonization, we must also work to ensure he is never deified and placed on a pedastal where he can do no wrong in our minds. He is probably the most intelligent President we’ve ever had on many levels, but intelligence, like physical strength, is morally neutral. I’d argue that any and every person with intelligence AND power must be pushed (wisely) by others to act from a place of love rather than fear.
